A series of 36 paintings combining the prints of Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) with the western step-by-step style of Bob Ross (1942 –1995).
Each painting is an amalgamation the visual styles of two very different teachers, Hokusai a 18th Century Japanese painter and printmaker with the Euro-American chocolate kitsch of Bob Ross. Previously, there had been an attempt to define what role each artist played in the production of Ayling & Conroy artwork. Ayling & Conroy looked for a strategy in which it would make it impossible to recognise either individuals input into a work of art. In the paintings either artist’s hand can not be singled out.
Although from very different backgrounds, Hokusai and Ross were both commercial artists and teachers of their time, Hokusai printing guides such as how to depict two men in a fight, Ross of how to paint landscapes and seascapes.
